Description.

Form Design Studio designed a bungalow in Indore which marries traditional family values of togetherness with its architectural shell.

Located in the heart of Indore, the Mashrabiya Residence is a 5BHK bungalow that redefines how urban homes can balance heritage, intimacy, and modern living.

Designed for a family of five, the house sits on a compact 1500 sq.ft. plot yet feels expansive and sunlit—an architectural response to the family’s vision of creating a home that nurtures connections and celebrates togetherness.

Features.

Courtyard
At the heart of the home lies a triple-height courtyard dining space, bringing natural light deep into the interiors. Large skylights and windows create a seamless connection between levels, while the open volume fosters interaction and togetherness across the family.
Volumes
The spatial planning revolves around interconnected volumes that allow movement, views, and light to flow throughout the house. Angled brick-clad walls, floating staircases, and double- and triple-height spaces create drama and depth, making the home feel expansive beyond its modest footprint.
Aesthetic Façade
The terracotta jali façade defines the residence, combining privacy with openness. It filters daylight into the interiors, casts intricate shadow patterns, and anchors the home in a timeless architectural language that balances tradition with modernity.

Function

The home’s defining feature is its terracotta jali façade, a modern interpretation of the traditional Mashrabiya screen. This porous skin filters light, casts intricate shadows, ensures privacy, and maintains a strong dialogue with the large community garden it overlooks.

Interiors

A Home Woven with Warmth

The interiors of Mashrabiya are designed to feel open, warm, and connected while maintaining a sense of calm restraint. Natural materials and handcrafted elements complement a clean architectural shell, creating an environment that feels both contemporary and rooted.

Custom terracotta lamps and artworks bring authenticity and a tactile richness to the spaces.
A palette of white walls and warm-toned flooring with traditional motifs balances simplicity with detail.
Thoughtfully framed openings connect bedrooms and living areas to terraces, and courtyard.
